This morning I was worried because we had run out of dog food for our Senior Pet Food Project. I had made the usual calls, but didn't have anything nailed down for tomorrow's "packaging party." Cancelling it was not really an option, the seniors at Walnut Grove would have been brokenhearted. We did have enough food for the homebound seniors, but I like to hedge my bets.
Then, around noon, I received a phone call from a gentleman named Ernest, offering us "about a palletful" of dog food. The food was at the Swift Transportation facility in Lathrop. All we had to do was pick it up. I was elated!
I called all of the volunteers I knew had a truck and Doug Fox (our Eagle Scout's dad) was available. I arrived first and, in what is probably the biggest test ever for my beleagured and abused Xterra, we managed to get an entire pallet of dog food into it. Roughly 1,500 pounds. But, that wasn't all. There was a second pallet of dog food. Another 1,500 pounds. The forklift guy just plopped the whole thing onto Doug's pickup and we were on our way. With 3,000 pounds of very good quality dog food.
I am so grateful for the wonderful gift from Ernest and his Swift Transportation co-workers. I have great faith in this wonderful community and my faith continues to be rewarded.
