Let's Get Adopted!

HSSC has some wonderful puppies that will be ready to go to adoptive homes next week! All puppies will be spayed or neutered, microchipped, vaccinated and crate trained. In addition, we will provide a free six-week obedience course at the Riverbank Petco with each puppy. The adoption fee is $200 per puppy (it's a bargain, trust me!)

The following puppies are available (more to come when I can get a still picture):

Tanner, Male, Aussie/St. Bernard/Viszla:

Moose, Male, Aussie/St. Bernard/German Shepherd

Terrier Puppy Update

UPDATE: Annie is spending part of the weekend at the vet. She needed IV fluids and antibiotics. Hopefully, that will make her feel a lot better. I also had them keep Oliver with her. He will need treatment for a skin condition caused by neglect and stress. It's easy to fix but it takes a long time. All of the puppies may have it. I will know more when I pick them up tomorrow. If you would like to help out with donations for their care we would greatly appreciate it. Just note on your donation that it is for the "Broadway Babies." All donations are tax-deductible.

It Must Be Puppy Season?

It seems to be raining puppies now, because another batch came to our attention.

The pups were rescued from a woman that had them crammed into small boxes in her car for most of the day without shade, food or water. Annie was in the worst shape because she was on the bottom of the stack. The woman had planned to dump the boxes on Highway 132 with the puppies still in them. I took her and Oliver to our wonderful vet. Oliver seems to have a skin problem but its an easily fixed one. He is super cute, to boot.Right now the other 4 are at the rescuers home, but won't be able to stay due to space. All are terrier/aussie or terrier/chihuahua.

Anyone interested in fostering one or more puppies can contact us directly. HSSC provides crates, food, supplies and vet care. Foster homes just need to provide love. Even better, I deliver.

Saturday's Adoption Event @ Petco

Adoption Fair Round Up

Saturday, we took 5 of the 8 puppies we have to Petco Riverbank for an adoption fair. We also had a couple of adult dogs, Malloy and Rosie. Since Edward the Bear is such a good babysitter to Idgie and Jack, I placed him in the enclosure with all of the puppies. Here he is at the start of the day:

The puppies managed to keep everyone entertained by running madly and wrestling at the Olympic level. Then they would pile on top of each other and nap (an activity I wish I could have participated in.) Of course, being puppies, they had their share of accidents. Fortunately, no one was too squeamish about picking up after them. (Note to volunteers: Apparently, its a violation of OSHA rules to put animal waste in the breakroom trash. They actually made a rule for that?) Here is Jack, pretending to be well-behaved on the way:

More pictures to come.

Anyway, we all had a great time and the puppies had a chance to get together and play. Edward the Bear did a great job of keeping the mayhem to a minimum. It was a lot of work and this is how he looked afterwards:

He earned that snooze!

Guidelines For Adoption

Now that HSSC is adopting out dogs and puppies (two are pictured below); here are some of our guidelines for adoption:

1) All dogs and puppies will be spayed/neutered, vaccinated, heartworm tested & microchipped prior to adoption. No exceptions.

2) No dogs or puppies will be adopted to renters without permission from their landlord or leasing agency.

3) Whenever possible one of our volunteers will do a homecheck.

4) No dogs or puppies will be adopted to a home where they will be kept outside, in a run or in a garage.

Basically, we expect your new family member to be treated like one. Pretty easy!

Eight Is Enough...(Okay, Maybe Not When It's Puppies!)

As much as I dislike breeding, puppies are too freakin' cute. Fortunately, the eight puppies HSSC just received will never breed; they will all be altered before adoption. Their mom will never breed again, since we are helping the family that found her get her spayed.

Some background: I received a call from some people that had a pregnant dog dumped by their property. They decided to keep the mom but the puppies would have to go to new homes. Animal control had already threatened a big fine if she wasn't spayed. It has always been my policy to offer to spay the mom if the entire litter were surrendered. That way HSSC can make sure all of them are fixed. In this case, nine dogs won't be breeding. Ever.

So now we have eight six-week-old Heinz 57 puppies. They will all be placed in foster homes and then adopted out. If you are interested in fostering or adopting, you may contact us through the website. Fosters are provided with everything necessary for the puppies, including food, crates, potty pads, etc. HSSC has already wormed and given the first shots. All puppies will be vaccinated, altered and microchipped before adoption. In the meantime, enjoy this puppy picture:

Rosie The Red Nose

From Rosie's foster mom:

Rosie is approximately 8 months old, originally rescued from Medford OR and transported to a Northern California rescue organization. She found her way to Modesto from there to be fostered, where she has grown in many ways...all the way up to about 65 lbs and still growing!

Rosie is spayed, current on all vaccinations and micro-chipped. She has been “pack-socialized” and begun basic obedience training.

She loves to ride in the car, and play in the water. Rosie loves to snuggle, and hasn’t been convinced that she isn’t a lap dog...she sometimes struggles with the whole “personal space” issue. Rosie is playful and energetic, but also knows how to mellow out. She’s not an early riser and always the last one out of bed in the morning.

Rosie does well with my 8 year old grandson, but I would be cautious in placing in a home with young children. She really doesn’t understand her size and strength yet! She has not been tested with cats, and gets along well with her pack members. But, Rosie will need a firm hand, as she is a clever girl and will manipulate anyone she thinks she can get away with.

I think she would do best in a home with a male dog that has equal energy, and who would be willing to put up with her puppy education. Rosie tends to pester others when she wants to play... Please call today to meet “Miss Rosie Posie” or as my husband calls her “Rosie Bozo” because she is a clown at heart!

Meet Deeogee

Deeogee is a wonderful, young male German Shepherd mix with personality and charm! He was found by his foster mommy skinny, wandering and lost. After many good meals he is no longer a stick figure and would love to find a good home. He had been obedience trained at some point in his young life because his manners are excellent.

He has been neutered, up-to-date on all shots, does well with other dogs and would make a great companion. For more information about Deeogee, contact HSSC at 209-345-5967.
